How can Data Warehousing help companies save Cost??

23/12/2013

Data warehousing help save cost
One basic fact that every business understands is about reduction in costs. While the technology is growing by heaps and bounds, the businesses need to grow as well if they have to compete. It is true that the aspiring Enterprises find it compulsory to deploy the newer technologies. This helps them with their pace of growth and gives them an edge if they make use of technology at the right time. But it is also true that these companies resist investments which are huge. The considerable costs of deployment to adopt a change may be enormous if it is to be implemented across the Organization.

The smart way to deal with the problem is going department by department. Most of the businesses deploy a new technology in one of their units, and slowly expand it across the Organization if they witness the benefits. But there may be even bigger savings to this, if the connect between units can be established, and the same implementation can be used across the Organization. And surprisingly, this interconnect can be utilized to an extent using Data Warehousing Tools.

1.       Cost Savings By Operational Data:

The reduction in capital expenditure can be soon realized if the Organizations stop depending upon the external data sources for their various units. This can well happen by using the past data generated over the years. This data, when utilized by a number of Data Warehousing tools can help in producing operational logics within the unit. By opting for the specific useful logics and combining with the parameters collected by the DWH tools, the units can have an access to the real time operational data which is granular.

2.       Streamlining Deployments Accelerate Results:

Faster and more accurate data can be generated if the deployment within a unit is streamlined with the sources. The granular leveled details can help in reporting many high level parameters which can be used Organization wide. Thus, making use of the same source, the data warehousing tools can have a deeper insight and produce the results which are benefitting to multiple units. This gets easier if it can be established that in what manner these units are connected to each other. In other words, inter connection within departments can help in the generated output being used more effectively.

3.       Database Partitioning For Real-Time Operations:

The Operational units are a little different from the rest in an Organization, since these depend upon the most recent data. While the data warehousing tools have an excellent storage and impeccable ability to generate output based on the past information, the real time operational warehousing cannot wait for this processing to get over. Database partitioning is a resolve for this. The advanced tools have the inherent feature for such real time operations. A quick access to the partitioned database gives an access to the time critical information, which is individually utilized for the reporting purposes. The same input is later utilized for processing by the DWH tools to generate results at various levels.

4.       OLAP Cubing Services For All Users:

Conventionally, there are a few select power users working on OLAP systems that are decision makers and report developers. With the BI tools making it possible to integrate any number of dimensions, more businesses or units can be linked. The ad-hoc query or an in-depth reporting is possible with ease. This provisioning makes it simpler for the Organization to use the same information unlimited times, with a clear insight into the dependency between parameters.

5.       Smarter And Integrated Decision Making:

The use of BI tools if used across the Organization can facilitate the unit leaders to look into the dimensions from their own perspective. With dependency about the information eliminated from other sources, there is a quicker decision making which can shape up. The points of view can be collaborated from these units and an Organization level decision can be taken with no further delay. This is crucial for the businesses which wait for the departments to complete analysis before they come to a common conclusion.

Dealing with pressures of Online Transaction Systems

22/12/2013

Online Transaction processing systems challenges
Most of us get too happy with the newer payment methods appearing online. After all, more ways to pay ensure a comfortable transaction option for us. Login to the online portal or through the social media User-Id. There are security gateways in between as we progress through. These additional steps sometimes frustrate us and we demand to have the online transaction process even simpler. With the security in place and the comfort retained, we always wish for something which is fast and easy.

This has benefited businesses as well. The businesses which appear online have a wider scope to the target audience. Their products boost up with the online sales and the amount show up in their bank accounts almost immediately. More and more businesses have realized this, and are turning towards adding more options for payment portals to attract the customers.

The IT however is under immense pressure. They see every change as the number of query they need to deal with, the additional changes they need to make to the existing systems and the security threats they need to worry about. For them, each part of the online transaction process means a couple of queries which are to be optimized, ran and processed. And, at the end, the output is supposed to be CORRECT every time, since these are the real time financial queries.

This scenario changes the way the IT staff looks at the developments. Even with the best implemented BI techniques in place, there are pressures which dawn on the IT department about Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) advancements:
  • With the Organizations going online for transaction processing, there is a huge amount of data to be addressed every day. This data is real time, and is supposed to grow in the coming years as everything turns up on the system.
  • More demands on having efficient systems does not necessarily mean that the IT staff is granted more budget. Most of the Organizations want to utilize the IT resources with no or very less additional cost, which means working harder for no extra benefits.
  • The data being processed is real time, which should be retained in its un-manipulated form, to have the businesses look into that for their Organizational planning and budgeting.

How To Deal With The OLTP Issues?

One approach to handle the problem is to separate two functions which the OLTP systems are handling. One is the processing of real time data, which is to be accepted instantly as an input query, and is to be processed with no delay what-so-ever. The second however is around the information which businesses use for their reporting, planning and budgeting processes. This part can be separated and moved on to a different environment. This leaves the system to deal with the real time data alone, which is huge, current and valuable. With the second function separated altogether, the server needs to process lesser queries and will be able to perform better and faster. As a consumer, it will reflect as the processing time taken for the transaction process to complete.

As for the reporting, the data need not be regenerated or duplicated. This is an expensive affair for the businesses if the data is huge, or if it depends upon the external sources for its generation. Rather, this data may be extracted from the log maintained in the first server. This makes use of the same data repeatedly with no additional cost involved.

For the businesses to perform better, they need to understand the importance of having a fast and efficient transaction process in place. The sooner the change can be brought to their IT environments, the better their business will reflect online.

Business Analytics and Big Data

22/12/2013

Big data and business analyticsBig data and business analytics
Every time in the past, whenever data issues posed a problem, experts in Business Intelligence came up with an idea to rescue. The varied BI tools underwent a series of transformation to introduce newer technologies which could handle the data in a better and subtle way. However, the magnanimity of this data grew over and over, and it continues to do so.

At the moment, Big Data is an immediate problem to deal with. The analytics show that generation of data through our sources which are off the paper has grown so rapidly where it is already difficult to manage that. Through the past years of 2012 and 2013, over 2.4 quintillions (2.4*(10^8)) bytes of data has been generated every day.  This is supposed to grow bigger, wider. Are we well prepared for this?

Concept Of Big Data:

The term came to existence in 2008 for the first time. Then, the volume of the data suddenly seemed too huge for the conventional systems to handle. It was an imminent threat for the IT experts to delve into the matter, owing to the value of incoming data. Moreover, it was not feasible to get rid of the old information which was present in the systems. Almost every BI tool made use of the historic data to decipher the future plans. This data, however, could be singled out as having three individual characteristics:

  1. Volume: The volume of Big Data was huge. Unlike past, there are modern systems today which can manage terabytes of data generation with ease. These are the complex systems though, which have been running successfully in the big Organizations and are supposed to tackle the heaviness of data generation with no apparent performance issue. The analysis is around developing these systems further, since the Big Data is going to grow in volume over the coming years as well.
  2. Variety: The sources for Big Data are many. And this contributes to the heterogeneous data. Conventionally, the BI tools excel in handling either the structured or the unstructured data. There have been ways in which the combination of structured and unstructured data could be fed into multiple systems and could be processed to have usable output in the end. However, the many sources added on in the past have been unimaginably varied. The inputs from Social Media as considered a useful input from the subject exerts, pose a problem in terms of the data which will be completely unanticipated.  Likewise, the sensors on vehicles and animals supposed to gain a deeper understanding of the unknown world, leads to a form of data which may be anything.
  3. Velocity: The traditional systems tend to process the input data, before it can be considered useful. However, the Big Data has a volume which is enormous. Storing in the systems to have it processed adds a complexity to the storage mechanisms. Thus, the need of the time is to have systems which can handle the data in the real time. Extracting the Big Data and making use of it when it is still fresh, also demands to have smart systems which can deal with this fast flow of varied information.

How Will Business Intelligence Tools Play A Role?

Many Organizations have already initiated with the high level framework, which can deal with the volume and variation of data. This framework divides the information to various forms, which are different from each other. The next need for the Organizations is to have a system in place that can process the various forms of information and integrate it as one, in the end.

Understanding this in a technological aspect, the Organizations now need to understand which BI tools can be used individually to process which part of the information. This understanding will lead to a faster implementation in dealing with Big Data. The parts of input that still cannot be processed with the available tools may be handled by applying a few transformation logics. Thus, the only logical way to deal with Big Data at the moment seems to distribute it over the various systems, with minimal loss of valuable input rendered.

The Futuristic Virtualization

21/12/2013

Picture
Imagine that your company today announces a new rule, where you need not work on the company’s laptop. Instead, work on your own laptop, iPad, mobile phone, Kindle or any other electronic gadget which otherwise never fails to come off your hands. Won’t the life be exciting!!

This is not a fantasy. It is the next step towards which the VDI experts are working today with a futuristic perspective. And they have a wonderful name to this process:

BYOD: Bring Your Own Device

It is more relevant to the IT companies or technologically focused companies. Invariably, these are the enterprises which require each and every staff member to have a working machine on their desks. The security policies more than often do not allow the use of personal laptops and devices. This is exactly where the VDI plays a significant role. How?? Let us understand…

With the implementation of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure within a unit, the information and data resides onto a single data centre, which can be accessed by the individual users. The appropriate masking and the specific connections to the individual virtual machines (VMs) guarantee the security with the data. All that the users need is a connection to these VMs. In this reference, their own gadgets and mobiles serve as the thin clients to establish this connection. This enables the user to get connected from anywhere, irrespective of worrying about where the data resides.

The Advantages:

Apart from the known advantages associated with VDI, there are more to this set-up in terms of the management costs involved.
  • The IT management need not manage a large number of individual clients. Their concentration now is towards the main data centre where the information resides, which means a more frequent but a less time consuming administration.
  • The company can see this in terms of the huge savings with the endpoint devices, which they need not issue to the staff.
  • The employees can be connected from anywhere to their individual VMs, with no worry about where their data resides. The login through their personal gadgets also means an access on-the-go, even when they are travelling.

Overall, every concerned entity gets benefitted by this set-up. The financial aspect is considerable and the long-term savings are huge due to reduced equipment costs. However wonderful it may look, there are a few practical problems which require attention and further research. In other words, the problems which hold back this implementation to happen overnight through the enterprises:
  • The VDI access through anywhere means a very strong and uninterrupted internet connection. This becomes a challenge where the network latency does not favour the use of the gadgets outside the office building.
  • The various gadgets through which the login can happen should be compatible to the Desktop Interfaces. This poses a huge challenge to the technology which will need time to overcome. Especially, the mobile devices working on different specifications must come to a common standard.
  • There are licensing issues as well. There are the licensed applications purely for the Enterprises usages, barring the installation on personal devices. Even if the Enterprises grant the permission for such an installation, there are uncertainties involved if the employee leaves the company. He takes the application license rights on his device as well.
  • On the similar lines, there may be problems when the employee creates a copy of the office applications on the personal device. It is difficult to identify what kind of data is to be restricted under the confidentiality. This needs a continuous monitoring of everything that is being downloaded on individual devices.

Back up process in Virtualization - Agent Or Agentless??

21/12/2013

virtualization back upBack up in virtualization
The small and big businesses are slowly adopting Virtualization, after realizing its benefits. The Data Virtualization is on to a growing number with more and more vendors delving into the subject area.

One category however still remains to be understood in reference to the virtualization process. This is the backup or recovery process. Very often, the IT departments decide to deploy virtualization without taking into consideration the way data will be backed up. This is critical. While the data virtualization offers an easy way to back up or recover the data, it also demands a properly laid out back up plan in advance which can handle the things.

On a high level, there are two ways by which the data can be recovered or backed up from the host:

1.       By The Agent:

The agents are the software which are responsible for a full back-up on the machine. This also includes the I/O processes. In other words, every single activity been performed in the past needs to be backed up with no loss.

Considering what these software solutions are capable of, in the light of virtualization, these can be installed on two locations in a virtual environment:
  • Agents On Server:  This means the physical servers. In most enterprises, the CPUs are underutilized. This ensures that the agents implemented on server do not hamper CPU cycles, thereby keeping the host performance intact. These agents are very capable software which take into account everything needed for the recovery. All the past I/O processes along with the full data and applications are backed up in entirety. When run on off peak times, the back-up process puts the CPU to an optimum usage.
  • Agents On VMs:  This method is CPU intense and not much recommended. This is because the agents when reside in the VMs, compete with the host resources and the performance is directly or indirectly affected. Also, considering that most of the VDI solutions work in dynamic load environment, a CPU intense process add to the unwanted risks which may arise, if the back-up process competes with the load balancing resources.

2.       Agentless:

In this back-up solution, there is no software running on the server. There is an entirely different server used to back-up processes by using snapshots of the activities. There are back-up applications today which are virtualization aware. This means that the interaction with the host server is triggered based on certain parameters like the scheduled time, block size or a specific I/O activity.

This offers a better management and higher CPU efficiency without the threats of load burdening on the server. Still, there are applications which cannot be backed up completely using this mechanism. Those require special handling and thus demand a different back-up process.

Which Back-up Process Is Better?

In a VDI environment, the ideal solution for a complete back-up while retaining server performance is Agent + Agentless Back-up solution.

Benefits of having Agent + Agentless Back-up process:

The VMs and files can be backed-up using the agentless solutions while the deduplication, I/O processes and specialized datasets may use the agents on servers which specialize in the tasks. This rules out the threat on VMs and does not compete with the host resources in any manner. The CPU efficiency and server performance stay unaffected.

However, for the recovery process, the VMs need to be mounted on the server which causes the delay.

For this purpose, the agentless back-up solutions are assisted with the light weight agents. The lightweight agents are the software which specialize in a few tasks, and not full back-up. These agents connect with the VM during the back-up, and help in the computing and mapping of databases. Movement of data is not a part of this process, which is done by the agentless solutions.

How can IT units benefit from Virtualization??

20/12/2013

It is true that desktop virtualization has brought an altogether new era of technology, which may or may not appeal to the businesses. However, there is one sector that can feel indebted to the virtualization process immensely. That is IT administration. Whether or not the companies see a value deploying virtualized systems, the IT administrators understand how much they can achieve with this system in place.

Not only in terms of a better production number and easy maintenance, virtualization has another important aspect too. The Organization data is too valuable to be at risk. The conventional systems where the users get connected to the network always pose a question to this security. With virtualization, there come a number of isolation options and ease of tracking, which can make sure that, is important data is always safe. Here are a few obvious advantages which are immediately achieved, when the right virtualization solution is deployed.

1.       Better Security Against Malware And Viruses:

When more and more users end to connect to the corporate networks, it is difficult for IT administrators to keep a constant check on the virus and other malware attacks. With crucial company data stored in the systems at client end, there is always a risk securing this valuable and confidential information. But, with virtualization, this data no longer stores in the endpoint devices. The users access the information stored in the data center, which becomes the single point of maintenance and management for IT department.

Likewise, the user applications stay secured by using the isolation methods. It is possible to induct extra layers of security in a virtual desktop environment for extra sensitive information. There can be multiple OS instances or application isolation technologies easily implemented to keep the user applications safe.

2.       BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device):

This is a new term introduced recently with reference to data mobility. With the desktop virtualization, it is safe and easy for the Organizations to offer data access to employees through their personal devices. This is a welcoming change for both the employee and the employer. However, this arrangement works under some ethical code of law. There must be standard guidelines within which the company’s data can be accessed from a device which is personal to the user. There are licensing issues too. With the corporate management deciding over these factors, BYOD policy can be streamlined. If implemented, this can save a considerable amount for the Organizations, as the need to purchase too many client end devices is ruled out.

3.       Disaster Recovery Process:

When a disaster happens, the conventional systems used to declare the downtime spanning several hours. For Operational systems, this is usually very critical to have the users stay off the system for a long time. Such disasters were real nightmares. However, with virtualization in place, it is easy to move the complete virtual environment on to a new server. The entire process is quick, and the user access is not interrupted for too long.

In addition to this, retrieving the data from a virtual desktop environment is much easier, than getting from a dead server.

4.       Easy Management:

Against the thousands of desktops and laptops which were required to be maintained, the IT team finds it easier to maintain a single data center through virtualization. This saves the companies a lot. With a little staff, there is much that can be done. All the maintenance and repair work is concentrated around the data center. The continuous and endless issues regarding the patching, updates, repairs and maintenance are completely ruled out.

The advance systems make it easier to have software which can do specific tasks. It reduces the manpower demands drastically and efficiency increases multifold. As for the companies, IT departments owe so much to the virtualization that cannot be ignored.
